To study the progressive collapse resistance of the long period complicated isolated structure, an actual hospital building was analyzed and discussed comprehensively. Two finite element models, viz. refined 3D FE model with slab and simplified 3D FE model without slab, were established for this hospital building. Nonlinear dynamic alternate path method was performed for the two models to investigate the progressive collapse resistance. The results show that the progressive collapse does not occur for the case of removing only one vertical structural member of the long period complicated isolated structure. The corner column has big influence on this isolated structures’ progressive collapse. For the case of removing two vertical structural members, the simplified 3D FE model without slab collapsed progressively, while the refined 3D FE model with slab stay standing. So the simplified 3D FE model without considering the effect of slab may lead to too conservative results. The effect of slab should be considered when studying the structures progressive collapse resistance.
