Study on the influence of heavy load at top of absorption towers to dynamic response

Abstract:The absorption tower is a structure with the properties of thin cylindrical shell, large rectangular openings and high-rise. Especially when the WESP is added, the obvious character of top-heavy of the structure leads to buckling failure under earthquake. To perform contrastive analysis of displacement, acceleration and stress response of two absorption towers with WESP, shaking table tests of absorption tower scale model with WESP under different types, different input angle seismic action and different liquid height were conducted . Results show that: the dynamic response of absorption tower without WESP is largest under far-field seismic waves| after installing the WESP, the amplitude increases, natural frequency decreases, and the dynamic response reaches maximum under near-field seismic waves. The stress at the opening jumps, leading to stress concentration phenomenon. Based on the weakening effect of openings on stiffness, the most unfavorable direction of seismic waves is the opening direction. The largest dynamic response of two absorption towers both appear without liquid. With the slurry height increasing, the dynamic response decreases, thus, the slurry absorbs energy and the heavy load weakens the function.
