Abstract:High temperature induced by fire significantly reduces strength and stiffness of structural steels, and leads to structural damage, serious failure or collapse. People begin to pay attention to research on fire resistance design theory of steel structures in nineties of last century. Fire resistance problem of steel structures was focused around the world after “9·11 attack” happened in US in 2001. Through development in last several decades, comprehensive design theories and methods have come into being in structural fire engineering. In this paper, the reasons of the fire leading to damage of steel structures were introduced and the development of fire resistance design principles was discussed. The great research progress and key research trends in fire resistance of steel structures were concluded. It may be helpful for relevant researchers.
