Abstract:To explore the applicability of the effective width of load-distribution derived from ribbed beams on the bridge decks of the system of intersecting-beams of cable-stayed bridges, a 1∶6 scaled model for the segment girder of cable-stayed bridge was designed and fabricated. Based on the classical theory of thin plate, an analysis model of continuous plates considering the flexible support of the cross-beam was established to study the deformation influence of the cross-beam on the effective width of load-distribution of the bridge deck. The static load data under varying lateral loading locations were used to verify the accuracy of the analysis model. The case analysis shows that the effective width of load-distribution considering the deformation of cross-beam is larger than that ignoring the cross-beam deformation. Moreover, the effective width of load-distribution decreases gradually from the bridge deck near the cross-beam to the deck far from the cross-beam along the longitudinal bridge direction, which is contrary to that distribution of the code for bridge design. Further, there is a bi-directional loading area of the bridge deck adjacent to the main girder. If the effective width of load-distribution in the code for bridge design is still used in the bi-directional loading area, the response of the bridge deck under vehicle loads may be underestimated in the design.
