Abstract:Towards the transverse seismic problems of long-span cable-stayed bridge side piers, a new transverse seismic system of bridge
side pier, as a combination of bridge transverse metallic yielding dampers (TMYD) and sliding bearings, was proposed. Meanwhile, the
theoretical design method of TMYD was developed in consideration with actual seismic demand of bridge. Then, a practical cable-stayed
bridge with 660m main span was taken as an example to demonstrate the feasibility of this method. Furthermore, a complete analysis was
carried out for the new transverse seismic system of bridge piers from the following aspects, including seismic response of key parts,
effect of dampers on the transverse basic control vibration mode, energy-dissipation capacity of seismic system and effect of seismic
input. The results show that the new seismic system of long-span cable-stayed bridge side piers exhibits pronounced damping effect and
compared to the conventional system, the new system is insensitive to the seismic input.
