Abstract：Developing the high-performance structural engineering that is characterized by
excellent performance in safety, serviceability, workability, environmental protection,
maintainability, and durability etc. is the core strategy for the future development of structural
engineering in China, and is also an inevitable course for realizing the goal of sustainable
development in structural engineering. This paper analyzes the severe challenges of structural
engineering in China, and puts forward the development strategy with the core concept of high-
performance structural engineering. Some key issues restricting the development of high-
performance structural engineering in China are also discussed. Finally, several suggestions for
achieving the strategic objective of high-performance structural engineering are recommended from
the aspects of both the engineering construction system and the scientific research system.
