Study on slippage failure mechanism of horizontal seams in prefabricated columns

Based on the calculation methods for the shear capacity of horizontal seam in Chinese and Japanese codes, the bearing capacity for a total of 96 specimens with six sections, four different shear span and four axial compression ratio respectively is analyzed. . Improved design equations for calculating shear strength of the horizontal seam are proposed, whose effectiveness is validated by the numerical simulation with ABAQUS software. The results show that under small axial load ratios, such as 0.1, the shear slippage failure along the horizontal seam will occur at the bottom of the column. The shear capacity equations for the horizontal seam shows that the shear failure may not happen, and the actual results are quite different from the calculated ones. The accuracy of the Chinese Code for calculating the shear capacity of horizontal seam should be further studied. The calculation of the shear capacity of horizontal seams by the proposed equations are in good agreement with the numerical results, thus the effectiveness of the proposed equations are validated.
