Abstract:The structure safety, operation safety and management of airport runway mainly relies on the traditional method of manual detection and empirical analysis. By adopting this method, however, the problems of complex procedure, low efficiency and large errors are generally involved, so that the hidden risk of runway may not be identified in time and the requirements for the high-efficiency operation and real-time safety of airport runway may not be satisfied. In view of these problems, the concept of smart runway is proposed here. In this concept, the smart sensors are used to collect the multiple-dimension information, manage and analyze the collected data of runway in real-time. Additionally, the framework and functions of smart runway are clarified, and the approach of realizing the functions of smart runway is introduced. Based on the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the first runway pavement condition sensing system with four runway in China was constructed, and based on the first western runway in Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, the first smart runway with intelligent sensing, automatic analysis and early warning for the runway condition was built. The smart runway technology is characterized by “Airport of Four Characteristics” and “New Construction”, which provides the guidance and demonstration for airport construction of China.
