Abstract:In the traditional assessment method for soil classification of vibration compaction based on Fellenius-Eslami researches, only sand and gravel soil are considered to be compactable. However, the engineering practices of China in the past decade have revealed that the method is over-conservative. In this work, the two construction cases for the treatment of liquefiable silt ground and complex coastal liquefiable ground using cross-shaped vibratory wing are introduced, so that the good performance of vibration compaction technology in treating silt ground can be validated. Furthermore, an assessment method for vibrating compacted soil based on the Chinese standard for soil classification using the piezocone penetration test (CPTU) is proposed. It is believed that the ground soil with normalized CPTU data classified into “medium sand”, “fine sand”, “silt sand” and “silt” can be improved by vibratory probe compaction method. Hence, the new assessment method is suitable for the practical applications of the vibratory probe compaction method to China, and at the same time the advantages of the method in ground improvement ared highlighted.
