Numerical simulation for influence of combination layout on wind-driven rain distribution on building facades

Abstract: Wind-driven rain (WDR) is one of the main moisture sources of building facades and an important influencing factor for the durability of wall material and hygrothermal performance of building. Nowadays, most of wind-driven rain (WDR) studies reported in the literature focused on isolated building layout, while studies for WDR distribution on building facades affected by combination layout and aerodynamic interference of layout were relatively absent. The WDR simulation approach based on the Eulerian multiphase model was employed here. After verifying the good applicability of this approach to complex situations of WDR field for two tandem buildings, WDR simulations were performed for the interfered building under different working conditions, considering the tandem layout of two buildings and the interfering building with different building height (h) and different building spacing (d). WDR distribution on the windward facades for the interfered building were obtained and compared with isolated building. The characteristics of WDR distribution on the interfered building and the variation law of WDR in local region were analyzed. Consequently, the influence characteristics of aerodynamic interference of WDR distribution on the interfered building facades under different layouts were obtained. The results show that the WDR distribution on windward facades of the interfered building may be significantly affected by the height of the interfering building, but the influence of building spacing is relatively smaller. The influence of aerodynamic interference on WDR distribution on the interfered building facade can be effectively reflected by the local region interference factor.
