Abstract:Catwalks have aerodynamic influences on main cables of a suspension bridge during its construction, which may affect the galloping performance of main cables. To study this issue, five typical steepled and flat-toped main cables of a long-span suspension bridge during its construction are selected. Firstly, aerodynamic coefficients of the main cable model manufactured by the 3D printing technology are obtained based on the wind tunnel test, with and without the aerodynamic influence of catwalk considered, respectively, and then, the comparison and analysis are conducted. Furthermore, the Den Hartog criterion is used to analyze the galloping of the main cables at the wind attack angles ranging from -3° to 3° based on the aerodynamic coefficients. Results indicate that the drag coefficients of the main cables are reduced to some extent due to the aerodynamic influence of catwalk, and the lift coefficients are changed obviously| the catwalk has significant impact on the main cables and hence its aerodynamic influence shall not be ignored when studying the galloping of the main cables during the construction of suspension bridge.
