Experimental study on mean drag force coefficients of stay cables with helical lines

Abstract:The variation laws of drag force coefficients of cable models with the Reynolds number are obtained through a series of high frequency force measurement tests with Reynolds number from 13×104 to 43×104. A cable with smooth surface and other 25 cables with varying helical lines are employed to analyze the influence of the diameter and the space of helical lines on the drag force coefficients. The drag coefficients and their fitted curves are classified as the subcritical region, the critical region and the super critical region. The results show that the effect of Reynolds number on drag the force coefficients is weak for the models with the helical lines. With the increase of the space and identical diameter of the helical lines, the drag coefficients decrease in the super critical region. With the increase of the diameter and even space of the helical lines, the drag coefficients show an increasing trend in the super critical region. Based on the results, the optimized arrangement with good wind rain-wind vibration mitigation results of the helical lines can be determined with the minimal drag force coefficients.
