Abstract:This paper presents the state-of-the-art of environmental geotechnics in the following four aspects: ①characterization and assessment technology of contaminated sites including electrical resistivity cone penetration test (RCPT), membrane interface probe (MIP), optical fiber chemical sensor (OPCS), and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) methods. The review of the application of centrifuging in rupturing characteristics of transport of contaminants in soils and groundwater, and classification and risk-analysis of contaminated sites are also presented; ②coupled models in simulating interactions of municipal wastes in modern landfills, particularly the model titled biodegradation-mechanical-hydraulic-chemistry and its practice applications. Various methods for assessing containment performance as well service-life of landfill bottom liners are introduced; ③reuse of industrial wastes as sustainable geo-materials. Particularly, the review is made for the use of calcium carbide residue and lignin, which are industrial wastes, in stabilizing soft clayey and silty soils used as roadway subgrade materials; and ④remediation of industrial contaminated sites. Specifically, the concept, design parameters and practical applications of solidification/stabilization, soil-bentonite vertical cutoff walls, and micro-bubble air-sparging techniques in remediating contaminated soils and groundwater are presented.
