A fiber beam-column element considering nonlinear shear effects for seismic response analysis of reinforced concrete coupling beams I: theory and implementation

Abstract:Conventional RC coupling beams have been widely used in high-rise building systems such as shear wall and frame-core tube. For seismic analysis of such high-rise structures, however, an efficient, accurate and convenient element for this kind of coupling beam is in urgent need. Based on the summary of test results in China and abroad and the comparison of different computational models considering the nonlinear shear effects, it is proposed to introduce the sectional shear force-shear deformation relationship and the shear force-shear sliding relationship to the traditional fiber beam-column element with distributed plastic hinge. By making use of the provided program interface, the element is developed and added into the general finite element package MSC.MARC(2007r1). Furthermore, the shear force-shear deformation skeleton curve and hysteresis rules, which can reflect the shear characteristics such as the pinching effects, degradation of strength and stiffness degeneration of shear capacity and can consider any complex loading path, is proposed for the conventional RC coupling beam. On the other hand, a new section shear force-shear sliding law is developed to model the special shear sliding effect which can not be neglected in the coupling beam. Shear sliding and shear compression limit formulas are also given to judge different failure modes. Based on the shear force-shear deformation relationship and the shear force-shear sliding relationship, the shear element and sliding element are developed, respectively, and then are combined to simulate the behavior of coupling beams.
