Abstract: China is undergoing rapid and large scale infrastructure development. Construction safety is of paramount importance in this movement. The authors address the following aspects that bring great impacts on construction safety of major infrastructures: (1) the risks involved in a continuous record-breaking engineering practice such as the dam height, bridge span, and speed of trains, etc.; (2) the large number of engineering projects at the aging period of their life cycle; (3) new disciplines of infrastructures with limited experience of safe construction and maintenance; (4) serious natural hazards against the effort of establishing welfare societies; and (5) risk potentials in China′s urbanization process. This paper provides a framework for improving safety performance on major construction projects in the coming years in China. It covers the key technological problems involved in the infrastructure development of energy resources, mining, transportation, metropolitan high rising buildings, etc. Special attentions have been paid on the areas of reliability analysis, aseismic design in strong earthquake prone zones, hazard mitigation approaches and information-based safe construction.
