Study on the fire design method of timber beams and columns based on charring rate

Abstract:Due to the lack of systematic study on the fire performance of timber structures, current national standards, Code for design of timber structures (GB 50005—2003) (2005 edition) and Code for fire protection design of buildings (GB 50016—2014), only provide the relevant specifications for the fire endurance of timber members. Since the burning mechanism, charring rate and calculation method of the fire endurance were not involved, the developments of multi-storey and large-span timber structures were limited. In this work the burning and charring properties of common tree species were systematically investigated, and the calculation formula for the charring rate of timber was developed. Finally, the fire design method based on charring rate was proposed for timber members. The research results may provide references for related standards and technical support for the application of timber buildings in China.
