Abstract:To study the influence of the matching degree of reinforced concrete on failure pattern of frame columns, the quasi-static tests in five 1/4-scale plane frames was conducted. A comparison between different shear-span ratio and strength of steel bar was conducted for their influences on the frame columns failure pattern. The failure pattern, the hysteresis curves, the skeleton curves of the columns were obtained. The ductility and the deformation curves of structures were studied. Furthermore, the matching coefficients and the normalized coefficients of shear span ratios were proposed to analyze 104 columns data. The results show that the matching degree of reinforced concrete has a significant effect on the columns failure pattern. When the matching degree properly, the columns were dominated by flexural failure. Relatively high strength of the reinforcing steel will cause shear failure of the column. In the seismic design of frame columns, the matching degree of reinforced concrete should be considered to avoid brittle failure of columns.
