Abstract:In the paper, according to “Dao follow the nature”, it is pointed that
in anti-seismic structure, always to increase its strength and rigidity in order to
antagonize strong nature force is not a good idea, to suit nature and overcome
firmness by gentleness maybe win ideal results. The history of earth reinforcement
in flood control in China is introduce briefly; excellent behavior of reinforced
soil structure in earthquake is indicated. The behavior of some geosynthetic-
reinforced soil walls in 1994 Northridge earthquake (USA), 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu
(Kobe) Earthquake (Japan), 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake (Taiwan, China), 1999 Kocaeli
Earthquake (Turkey), 2001 El Salvador Earthquake (Central America), 2004
Niigataken-Chuetsu Earthquake (Japan), 2008 Wenchun in China is introduced. An
important result is obtained that in the famous earthquakes, no instability and
collapse of reinforced soil structure are observed. EPS (Expanded Poly-Styrol)
embankments were built in road widening project and backside of abutments for
bridges, its seismic stability is confirmed. It is concluded from survey results
that geosynthetics have excellent anti-seismic property, because of its light
weight, high strength and excellent pliability and toughness.
