Abstract:To investigate the axial compressive performance of the prestressing-SMA confined concrete columns, the tests of eight concrete column specimens confined with SMA wires were conducted. Based on the test results, the influences of reinforcement amounts, pre-strain levels and reinforcement modes on axial bearing and deformation capacity of the concrete columns were analyzed. The results show that the failure mode of the concrete columns changes from brittle failure to ductile failure duo to the restraining effect of the prestrained superelastic SMA wires. The ultimate bearing capacity of the concrete columns increases with the increasing of the reinforcement ratio and prestrain of the SMA wires. The reinforcement amount of the SMA wires has significant influence on the peak deformation of the concrete columns, but the effect of prestrain of the SMA wires on the peak deformation is relative limited. SMA-FRP composite restraint mode can significantly improve the bearing capacity of concrete columns, while has negligible influence on the peak deformation. The study results can be used as a reference for future engineering structure repairing, reinforcement and seismic design on the damaged reinforced concrete column.
