Abstract:To achieve ductile failure of glass beams, reinforced glass (RG) beams with stainless steel arranging at their tensile area of the bottom were manufactured, by referring to the principles of reinforced concrete structures. After the breakage of glass panes, the stainless steel can transfer tensile force to offer the high post-breakage load-carrying capacity of RG beams. In this work, an experimental study on the bending performance of RG beams was reported. The mechanical performance and failure modes of RG beams were observed and identified. The pre-breakage and post-breakage load-carrying mechanisms were studied through the test observations, load-displacement curves, load-strain curves and crack developments. Then, the bending performance of RG beams was quantitatively described by defining 6 mechanical indicators, and the influences of glass type, reinforcement ratio and section height on the mechanical indicators were analyzed, so that the major influencing factors on the bending performance of RG beams can be identified. The results provide experimental basis for the design and analysis of RG beams.
